Charcoals

Drawing with charcoal is probably the chiaro-scuro technique par excellence. Few other drawing media allow to achieve a light-dark effect on paper so directly and quickly.

The works shown here are examples from a larger series of plain-air sketches of Basel fountain figures. They were all taken during the COVID pandemic and during lunch breaks in parks. The processual nature is deliberately preserved on the sheets and is part of the fixation. The large-format Canson paper used here provides an ideal structure for creating light-shadow effects in direct sunlight on the drawing objects.
